A railroad crossing at the heart of an old plantation village.

Many years ago, workers traveled the island mainly by train.
Those were the days of pineapple and sugar cane.

I have dreamed of this photo since the day I got my first camera.
The trains still run, sometimes, in a certain direction.

You must listen closely..

Interesting perspective in this scene.
To me it feels like there are a few elements that really stand out to make this photo and scene into an almost perfect one. I'll get back to the "almost perfect" later...
The perspective of the photo with the rail leading off into the distance is an element that I feel most photos should have, even though it can be close to impossible to achieve that in all photos. Here I feel you do that well.
The overall scene looks quite subtle, relaxing even. It incorporates those little details in a place that virtually anyone can familiar. The rail crossing sign for example. Propably something that anyone would recognise.
I also find the overall colour and warmth of this photo to be really good. Which leads me to asking, is this a sepia halftone? Sure looks like that to me... but it is nothing wrong with this, it looks just grand!

Now I said almost perfect. Here is my opinion of why.
The rail tracks lead the view beautifully into the photo, but quite honestly I think the lead is a bit too dull and straight to get the full impact that it could have.
Ofcourse personal taste has a great deal to say here, you might like it best like this and I might prefer it differently. Personally I would have attempted to have the railroad do a slightly more diagonal cut back into the photo, using every element possible to draw the viewer into the entire scene and not just into the distance .
Just my opinion, it's honest, that is all I can say for now.

But overall I think the sum of elements adds up for a great photo.

I must say, I am honored. :) You must have taken a great deal of time out of your day to create such a helpful and thoughtful analysis. For that, I am grateful.

Since you were wondering, I didn't use any sepia tones. After the initial cropping, I adjusted the temperature a little bit, and then I added some fill light so that the sign would be easier to read. And.. that's about it. I have to admit that I felt uncomfortable about editing this particular picture, so I tried not to deviate from the original colors and tones.

I do understand what you mean about the tracks; even now I can visualize a diagonal POV. If I ever go back to that place some time (and I probably will), I'll make sure to think of that. On that day that I took the photo, I think I was afraid to get a little too close to the actual train station because there were all sorts of warnings against trespassing and whatnot. But I am happy that I was able to get the view of the railroad crossing that I wanted. :D

So, thanks again for the insight. I'm glad you like my photo that much!

Glad I can contribute! :)

The reason I ask about sepia tones is because I saw a tutorial on half sepia the other day, and the colours in your photo just sort of reminded me of the result I saw there.

Yeah, getting the POV you want can sometimes lead you into situations that you personally don't like and simply make you feel out of place. I have my personal goal of getting to the top floor of some buildings in a nearby city, but it sort of puts me out to know that if the right people show up I might even get arrested.... and needless to say I want to avoid that! :o

Keep up the great work, and yes, I did like your photo that much! :D

Aahhh, now I'm shedding a tear :happycry: (not too many though :cries: XD)
It's good to see that you enjoy art in a personal/spiritual way. Sharing a deep emotional bond with a piece of work, which you create with passion, it's, well, something great and rewarding a the same time.
Always happy to share my thoughs with someone as passionate about art as I am.
(At least I know that you'll never submit a photo of your new haircut and call it a "STATE OF THE ART SELF PORTRAIT XD)
